Follow  the Ride on

Raising Awareness

The purpose of The Ride For Their Lives is to raise more than $1,000,000 to help walk the halls of congress to advocate for laws that protect our children. The Surviving Parents Coalition focus changes to meet the ever present need to prevent predatory crimes against children and young adults. The four causes being focused on during this ride are:

1. DNA on felony Arrest:

Currently, most states and the federal government have passed legislation to collect DNA on felony “conviction”. It is critically important that DNA be collected on “arrest.”

Collecting DNA on felony arrests allows law enforcement to gain information on the possibility of the suspect being involved in other crimes. Studies show there is a 40% chance that burglaries and other non-violent crimes are being committed by someone who has already committed violent crimes, perhaps even murder. If they haven't, there is an 80% chance that they eventually will commit a violent crime. That means 40% of these non-violent crime scenes could have evidence that would lead us to a match with evidence from a serious assault, rape or murder.

Does your state collect DNA on arrest?

2. Protect Our Children Act of 2008
Did you know:
  • Tens of thousands of American children are in the hands of over ONE MILLION CHILD PORNOGRAPHERS that have been identified by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces (ICACs).
  • In 2007, The Surviving Parents Coalition joined forces with the National Association to PROTECT Children to pass the PROTECT Act to give more resources to the investigation and interdiction of child exploitation cases because in 30% of these arrests, local child victims are identified and often rescued from terrible abuse and online exploitation.

WHAT IS YOUR STATE DOING TO CATCH THESE MONSTERS?

THE PROTECT ACT...

  • RESCUES CHILDREN: *1/3 of investigated cases have identified a child victim
  • APPREHENDS CHILD PREDATORS: *96% conviction rate of investigated child pornographers
  • PROVIDES DESPERATELY NEEDED RESOURCES: To train special agents dedicated to investigating child pornography and exploitation cases.
  • Increased resources for state and local ICAC Task Forces
  • Increased funding for structure and protection of the ICAC Data Network
  • Supports advanced technology including new, dedicated Forensic Crime Labs to end backlogs training and education

3. The Adam Walsh Act
Did you know:

  • Ohio and Delaware are the only States in compliance with the Adam Walsh Act?
  • In addition to establishing a national sex offender registry law, the Act makes significant changes to sexual abuse, exploitation and transportation crimes. The Act creates new substantive crimes, expand federal jurisdiction over existing crimes and increases statutory minimum and maximum sentences.

A few highlights of the bill:

  • Establishes a comprehensive national system for the registration of sex offenders.
  • Establishes three tiers of sex offenders.
  • Requires all jurisdictions to enact criminal penalties for sex offenders who fail to comply with registration requirements.
  • Requires sex offenders to appear in person to verify their registration.
  • Imposes a fine and/or term of imprisonment for up to 20 years on sex offenders who knowingly fail to register.
  • Makes registration as a sex offender a mandatory condition of probation and supervised release.
  • Eliminates the statute of limitations for prosecutions of child abduction and felony sex offenses against children.
  • Directs the Attorney General to provide technical assistance to jurisdictions to help    identify and locate sex offenders relocated due to a major disaster.

Makes sure your state benefits and complies with the law!
